“Looking over the an experienced mixer — invaluable! Many of us not working at a recording studio never have the chance to sit beside and look over the shoulder of an experienced mixer, an experience all great mixers harken back to. Well, now you can. I particularly appreciated: Getting the whole mixing process in perspective: this is what it looks like over HOURS off close work. Getting things in proportion: Ah, so a lot of time is spend on x, and not so much on y. All those mixing articles (and books) had me barking up the wrong tree. Hearing Alice talk out loud as she listened, described problems, thought about solutions, then implemented those solutions. Watching Alice very honestly try solution A for a time only to decide she didn’t like that direction after all. BRILLIANT! And so liberating/empowering for the viewer. Getting “off hand advice” like: use your DAW’s compressor for basic basic things, then use those expensive compressor plugins for the fine tuning and surgical work. Off hand advice everywhere. Accompanying Alice on her mixing journey at a “real’ pace. Gotta say, I REALLY appreciated the pacing for the main sections. (The extras at the end are at a frenetic pace by comparison. Not nearly as helpful as the real/slow pace of the core videos.) Again; really, really appreciate a pace that allows for absorption, reflection and observation. For me — a non-EDM musician — this mixing course was just what I was looking for. I sincerely hope Alice puts out more videos like this, ideally with tracks that call for different reflections and experiments on her part. I would also like to see Alice put out a long video set of her starting with a blank sheet of paper, putting together a piece of music she cares about (sharing her thinking process along the way), revising that piece as necessary (sharing…), then mixing, mastering, and releasing it.
